Pix Counter, a technology from the startup Pix Force, brings to the market the possibility of optimizing activities that were previously done with slow and not so reliable methods. Through RGB sensors and cameras, the Computer Vision solution is able to count items in a fast, synchronized way within a production chain process. Operating with accuracy above 98%, the solution surpasses human capacity regarding the reliability of the collected data. Therefore, the use of technology is ideal for counting items on a large scale, as is the case of steel bars used in the civil construction sector. In the production chain, the device, which can be applied to a drone, can count items passing through the conveyor belt with precision and speed above human capacity. Likewise, Pix Counter is still able to guarantee efficacy in product traceability processes, which makes it easy to identify errors and make possible recall calls. Widely used in industries such as civil construction, the innovative technology comes to free human labor from exhaustive and unsafe tasks, and can be used in strategic functions. The steel producer ArcelorMittal is one of the companies that applies the solution developed by Pix Force, using the technology to solve different pain points presented by the Piracicaba unit, in the interior of São Paulo.

Steel industry gains automation processes
At ArcelorMittal, the solution was initially introduced to meet the demand of a client in Bolivia, responsible for distributing the steel bars produced by the multinational. The item count, however, was done through a manual process, considered extremely dangerous and exhausting for Bolivian workers. After employing the technology in the neighboring country, the company realized it could also use the solution to solve difficulties within its own factory. Counting a single bundle of steel bars can take two to three hours to complete if physical labor is used. The same bundle, which weighs 2,000 kilograms, can be counted in about one minute if Pix Counter is used, which proves the agility and effectiveness of the technology. Deivid Bazogli, Innovation Analyst at the multinational in Piracicaba, explains that the steel bars are produced by weight, but sold by unit. Therefore, the multinational was forced to estimate the quantity of bars sent for distribution based on the weight of the bundles, without being able to obtain the exact number of items being destined for the international market. The workaround was to send a number higher than required, as the calculation was not precise. To solve this problem, ArcelorMittal began making the solution available to distributors in Bolivia and Peru through mobile devices, as a minimum number of bars in the bundle is required to guarantee the product's construction standard. After the satisfactory results, the Piracicaba unit also began applying the Pix Counter to its own production line, through a static solution capable of counting each of the bars produced within the factory. “First, there was a need to serve clients in Bolivia and Peru, who are responsible for purchasing 30% to 40% of our monthly production, with an adequate and precise count of the bars. But then we realized that the solution could be applied within our own factory, optimizing production even further,” highlighted Bazogli. In addition to internal application, the analyst explains that the solution has also been used for national distributors that sell the bars by unit, directly to individuals. Artificial Intelligence (AI) solutions are being widely used in companies that want to scale exponentially. Products developed using Computer Vision systems ensure that deadlines and processes are completed effectively and safely without compromising product quality.
